If your business has five or more employees, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) requires you to complete certain safety tasks.

Health & Safety Tasks

Conduct Risk Assessments

🔥 Fire Safety Checks

  • Are fire extinguishers in place and clearly visible? (Check weekly)
  • Are fire extinguishers serviced by a competent person? (Annually)
  • Are smoke and fire alarms tested? (Every 6 months)
  • Flick test emergency lighting? (Monthly)
  • Conduct and record a fire drill? (Every 6 months)
  • Review fire risk assessments (Annually)

🔌 Electrical Safety

  • Inspect and test electrical appliances & equipment (Quarterly, 6 months, or annually depending on use)

📋 Staff Training & Compliance

  • Ensure all employees complete mandatory health & safety training
  • Update your Health & Safety Policy if required.
  • Consult employees and gather feedback on workplace safety
  • Training must be delivered in a language that employees can understand.

🚑 First Aid & Emergency Preparedness

  • Do you have an appointed first aid person and enough trained first aiders?
  • Display the HSE Health & Safety Law Poster in a visible area.
  • Ensure your business has suitable insurance coverage.
  • Fire Wardens: Do you have enough trained fire wardens?

  • Are workstations ergonomic and suitable? (Including home workers!)
  • Are workplace facilities (toilets, rest areas, lighting) suitable?
