Safe Pass is a one-day safety awareness programme aimed at general construction workers, craft workers and ‘onsite’ security personnel in the construction industry.

  1. WHAT IS SAFE PASS?

Safe Pass is a general duty on employers under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act (2005) for the provision of such information, instruction, training and supervision as is necessary to ensure so far as is reasonably practicable, the safety and health at work of their employees.  Under the Safety Health and Welfare at Work (2006) construction regulations,  Construction Safety  card / safety awareness programmes applies to:

  • (a) craft and general construction workers,
  • (b) persons undertaking on-site security work, and
  • (c) persons or classes of persons as may be prescribed by the Minister.

This course is for all construction site and local authority workers (including apprentices and trainees) to ensure that they have a fundamental knowledge of health and safety. The Health and Safety Authority in conjunction with the Construction Advisory Committee have produced a summary of the categories of persons to whom construction safety card does and does not apply.

This is a one-day safety awareness programme aimed at all who work on Construction sites.  The aims of the programme are to:

  • raise the standard of safety awareness in the construction industry
  • ensure that all site personnel after completing the one-day awareness programme can make a positive contribution to the prevention of accidents and ill health while working on the site
  • maintain a register of personnel who have received training
  • provide participants with a registration card, indicating that the holder has attended a formal course in health and safety awareness

Requirements:

  • 1 passport photo (available on the day for 6 euro)
  • PPS No, also confirmation of PPS number
  • valid ID (for example passport, driving license)
  • good level of English language
  • candidate must be at least 16 years of age
  • Non refundable deposit paid 24h from the date of booking
  • All participants of Safe Pass course must arrive at 7:50 am sharp. Delegates who arrive late will not be permitted to complete the course

Pre-payment is not refundable and it’s not exchangeable for another date.
Pre-payment will not be refunded in case:

  • if the participant doesn’t have a valid PPS no
  • if the participant is late more than 15 min for the course
  • if the participant doesn’t have a sufficient level of English
  • No fee returned to the client in the event that client does not attend on day of training and has not notified the service provider

 

All registration forms will be submitted to Solas within 24 hours. The delegate will be issued with a Safe Pass card by SOLAS in due course; assuming all information provided via the candidate application form is valid.

Safe Pass is valid for 4 years.

 

 

Additional Information for NON-IRISH based clients

Non-Irish Nationals, working on a main contract in the Republic of Ireland and employed by a subcontracting company, must provide additional documentation in order to apply for a the course. For contract employees who don't have PPS numbers it is possible to make an application for temporary process numbers which will allow them to participate in the course. The employer must be a non-Irish company and the contractor for whom employees perform work needs to be an Irish company (registered for Tax in Ireland).For these non-Irish PPSN holders the following documents are requested.

  1. What is Safe Pass?

  4. Why is Safe Pass necessary?

    Safe Pass is essential to educate workers about the hazards present on construction sites, ensuring they do not pose a risk to themselves or their colleagues.

  5. Non-National Candidates

    In order to obtain a SOLAS Safe Pass process number, non-national candidates temporarily employed by subcontracting construction companies for a specific duration on a primary contract in the Republic of Ireland must furnish documented evidence alongside proof of their employment status and national security number from their home country. This process is applicable exclusively under these conditions.

  6. Who pays for the Safe Pass course?

    Typically, the employer covers the cost of the Safe Pass course. According to sections 10, 25, and 26 of the Safety, Health & Welfare at Work Act 2005, employers are obligated to grant employees reasonable time off from their duties for awareness training, ensuring their health and safety, and without any reduction in pay. It is the employer's responsibility to ensure compliance with these provisions.

  8. When will I get my Safe Pass card?

    It may take up to three weeks after completing the Safe Pass course for the card to be posted.

    On the day of the course, you will receive a letter enabling you to work for 15 working days until your physical card arrives.

  9. When do I need to renew my Safe Pass training?

    Safe Pass training renewal is required every four years.

  10. What is the minimum age for Safe Pass Awareness Training?

    The minimum age for Safe Pass Awareness Training is 16 years.

  11. Is there a minimum or maximum size class?

    In accordance with SOLAS regulations, classes must consist of a minimum of 4 people and a maximum of 20 people for the course to proceed. It's important to note that these regulations are set by SOLAS not Ireland T&T.

  12. Replacement Safe Pass Cards - Lost Safe Pass Cards

    If your Safe Pass Registration Card is lost, stolen, or damaged, you have the option to apply for a replacement at a cost of €32. To initiate the process, please complete the Online Replacement Card Form, attach a recent passport-quality photograph, and proceed with the online payment. Ensure that the photograph you submit is of high quality, as applications with low-quality photos may be rejected. Replacement cards are typically issued within two to three weeks upon receipt of the fully completed replacement form and correct payment.

  13. What do I bring on the day of the course?

    On the day of the course, please ensure you have the following:

    • One current passport-size photograph (In our Dublin location this can be provided on the day at an additional cost of 6.00 euro. This photograph is required for the SOLAS Safe Pass card.
    • Proof of Identification (ID): Examples include a driver's license, passport, or public service card (physical form not a copy)
    • An Irish PPS number (for participants residing in Ireland only), as mandated by SOLAS.
    • A process number (for participants residing outside of Ireland without an Irish PPS number). This number can be obtained from SOLAS before the course begins, as per SOLAS requirements.
    • Payment or proof of payment.
    • The course is conducted in English unless arrangements have been made otherwise (all participants should have a proficient understanding of the English language).
    • Participants should inform us of any special needs at the time of booking the course.
  14. How long does the Safe Pass course last?

    The SOLAS Safe Pass course spans one full day of training, during which successful participants will receive their SOLAS Safe Pass card. The course is scheduled from 8 am to 5 pm, and attendees are kindly asked to arrive at the venue 15 minutes prior to the start time.

  15. Can I fail the Safe Pass course?

    Yes, you can fail the exam.

    The SOLAS Safe Pass course is highly esteemed, and obtaining the certification requires demonstrating comprehension of the course material. While it is possible to fail, our instructors are adept at assisting individuals who may face challenges. With their expertise, they can guide attendees through the course successfully. By approaching the course with a willingness to learn, attendees are likely to attain their Safe Pass qualification.

  16. Alternative Safepass Renewal

    The new Safepass renewal test is designed to allow those who have previously completed the classroom-based programme, to renew their Safepass card by completing a computer-based test in an approved Pearson VUE test centre.
