This workshop will present an overview of common mental health problems and it will enable participants to discuss and reflect on the common misconceptions regarding mental health difficulties.  It aims to promote positive mental health and self-care in the workplace which has benefits for all.

How these skills and approaches could help at work

At the end of the training session participants should be able to:

  • Recognise the signs of common mental health difficulties. 
  • Be able to respond sensitively to the colleague or customer.
  • Have an understanding of the mental health system – specifically with respect to being able to make appropriate referrals.
  • Have an understanding of the role and function of the mental health services in Ireland.
  • Be aware of how mental health services in Ireland are delivered.  

What the training will cover

  • Awareness of the symptoms and characteristics of common mental health problems
  • The experience of mental illness.
  • Particular mental health issues and common mental health problems in the workplace.
  • Engaging with the person experiencing mental health problems and signposting to suitable support services.
  • The mental health system in Ireland.
  • Making a referral under the Mental Health Act 2001.
  • Engaging with the mental health services.

During the workshop participants will have the opportunity to discuss the effects of mental ill-health and how it impacts on the workplace and develop better understandings around assisting/supporting those affected by mental health issues.
