Ensuring a safe workplace might seem overwhelming, but it often comes down to simple, essential steps. This checklist is designed to keep you compliant and ensure the well-being of your staff.
Reminder:
If your business has five or more employees, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) requires you to complete certain safety tasks.
✅ Health & Safety Tasks
⚠️ Conduct Risk Assessments
- Identify hazards and assess risks in your workplace.
- Keep a written record of all risk assessments.
📜 Safety Statement Renewal
- Every business is required to have a Safety Statement, which outlines the company's commitment to health and safety.
- This document must be reviewed and renewed annually to ensure it remains up to date with any changes in legislation, workplace conditions, or identified risks.
👤 Appoint a Competent Person
- Designate someone with the skills, knowledge, and experience to manage health & safety.
🔥 Fire Safety Checks
- Are fire extinguishers in place and clearly visible? (Check weekly)
- Are fire extinguishers serviced by a competent person? (Annually)
- Are smoke and fire alarms tested? (Every 6 months)
- Flick test emergency lighting? (Monthly)
- Conduct and record a fire drill? (Every 6 months)
- Review fire risk assessments (Annually)
🔌 Electrical Safety
- Inspect and test electrical appliances & equipment (Quarterly, 6 months, or annually depending on use)
📋 Staff Training & Compliance
- Ensure all employees complete mandatory health & safety training
- Update your Health & Safety Policy if required.
- Consult employees and gather feedback on workplace safety
- Training must be delivered in a language that employees can understand.
🚑 First Aid & Emergency Preparedness
- Do you have an appointed first aid person and enough trained first aiders?
- Display the HSE Health & Safety Law Poster in a visible area.
- Ensure your business has suitable insurance coverage.
- Fire Wardens: Do you have enough trained fire wardens?
🏢 Workplace & Facilities
- Are workstations ergonomic and suitable? (Including home workers!)
- Are workplace facilities (toilets, rest areas, lighting) suitable?
📑 Contractor & Visitor Safety
- Is contractor documentation up to date? (Should be checked daily)
