Post Collision Support

Under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005, a company vehicle is considered a workplace. The Act mandates that employers must, as far as is reasonably practicable, ensure the safety, health, and welfare of their employees while at work.

Investigating the root cause of any work-related incident is essential, especially when a driver has a history of repeated incidents. This process typically involves:

  • Reviewing the collision report to understand the circumstances surrounding the event.
  • Assessing the site of the incident to identify potential hazards or contributing factors.
  • Revisiting the site with the driver at a time comparable to when the incident occurred to observe and analyze the conditions.

Potential contributing factors, such as poor concentration, inadequate vision, or stress and time pressures, will be considered. The goal of this assessment is to implement measures that reduce the likelihood of similar incidents in the future and enhance overall safety.

Course Programme: Driver Support Training

Driver Support Training is a half-day course designed to assist drivers in reflecting on incidents and enhancing their skills to prevent future occurrences. The programme includes:

  • Incident Discussion: An informal discussion to review the events leading up to the incident, including the driver's perspective on what transpired.
  • Practical Driving Assessment: Driving on various road types to evaluate the driver’s style and hazard perception skills.
  • Incident Site Review: Where feasible, visiting the site of the incident to analyze available information, potential hazards, and how other road users might interpret the site. The site will be approached from multiple directions to provide a comprehensive understanding.
  • Constructive Feedback: Providing open and constructive feedback to the driver to reinforce learning and build confidence.

By examining the incident from all angles, the course aims to reduce the likelihood of recurrence and help the driver regain confidence.

Pre-Course Requirements:
Participants must hold a full driving licence for the relevant vehicle category and provide the appropriate vehicle for the course.
